Volunteer with us! Mazon is recruiting for five committees right now: Advocacy, Allocations, Finance, Nominations, Fundraising. Our current highest priorities are Advocacy and Fundraising.
All our committees besides Allocations are in the early stages of development, and people who join will find broad opportunities for their vision to significantly influence policy and tangible action at a fast-moving organization. The time commitment for all committees is planned around those with full-time jobs and families, and each one is chaired by a Board member.

The priority skills/qualifications we're looking for are:
Advocacy experience (Advocacy Committee - political connections, community organizing, lobbying, mass mobilization, research etc),
Frontline experience with low-income communities (Allocations Committee - social workers, non-profit staff, medical or justice system experience, etc),
Fundraising (Fundraising Committee - event planning, grantwriting, large gifts, small gift peer-to-peer campaigns, etc),
Impact investing (Finance Committee), and
'Connectors' with large and diverse networks (Nominations committee)
Here's some info on Mazon, for those new to our network:
MAZON Canada is a grassroots community foundation that feeds Canadians of all ages, ethnicities, faiths and abilities on behalf of the Jewish community by supporting front-line food projects across the country! We provide grants for food and equipment to a network of over 260 partners in 92 towns and cities across Canada, including food banks, school meal programs, shelters, comunity gardens, and more, all while educating and advocating toward an end to hunger.
Mazon has a small, young, high-energy staff, and a highly-functional, collaborative Board with membership in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. We take a political and social justice lens to our anti-poverty work.

Advocacy:
Mandate: To guide Mazon Canada’s advocacy projects, including outlining goals, priorities, and strategies. Key skills: Experience with advocacy work or policy work, interest in food security/food justice, familiarity with the Jewish community, committee and/or organizing experience, general understanding of marginalization/oppression and how it affects poverty, collaborative attitude.
Allocations:
Mandate: To assess Grocery Grant applications, apply Mazon Canada’s values in reviewing said applications, and recommend funding amounts to Mazon staff. To make recommendations on allocations process and criteria.
Key skills: (1) Front-line experience with poverty relief institutions, (professional, volunteer, and/or client experience) and a sophisticated understanding of how low-income people engage with these institutions. (2) Comfort and familiarity working with basic numbers and spreadsheets, and ideally, with reviewing budgets (Mazon offers optional budget-reading workshops for committee members). (3) Willingness to give feedback on application and process. (4) Attitude of allyship, trust, compassion, and respect for grantees and those who use their services. Ability to and experience with applying a social justice lens to committee work.
Nominations:
Mandate: To assist the Board and Committee Chairs in identifying, recruiting and retaining volunteers who will positively contribute to the mission of Mazon Canada.
Key skills: Broad network, interest in food security/food justice, some experience with talent acquisition/recruitment/interviewing
Finance:
Mandate: To assist the Board in overseeing financial affairs including development of principles of investing and key strategies (e.g. impact investing) that support the mission of Mazon Canada. Key skills: Interest in food security/food justice, knowledge of investment tools and products, including impact investing, some familiarity and/or financial and general knowledge of the charitable sector. One member (but not all members) should be an accountant.
Fundraising:
Key skills: Fundraising experience (large gifts, grantwriting, event planning, online campaign management, peer-to-peer campaign amanagement, etc). Exact mandate, details, time commitment, terms, and application info TBA.
